Fasting & Reflection Guide

Fasting during Lent isn’t about earning God’s favor. It’s about intentionally creating space to focus on Him. Whether large or small, fasting helps us recognize our dependence on God and refocus our hearts.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is voluntarily giving up something for a set time in order to seek God more intentionally. It may include food, media, habits, or distractions. The purpose of fasting isn’t deprivation, but devotion.

What Should I Fast From?

Choose something that:

  • Is part of your regular routine

  • Has your attention or affection

  • Creates space when it is removed

Examples include:

  • A meal or specific food

  • Social media or streaming

  • News or constant media intake

  • A habit that distracts from prayer

Start small if needed. Faithfulness matters more than intensity.

How to Practice Fasting During Lent

  1. Decide what you will give up for how long.

  2. Replace that time with prayer, Scripture, or silence.

  3. Pay attention to what surfaces in your heart.

  4. Invite God to speak and shape you.

When you feel the absence of what you’ve given up, let it become a reminder to turn toward God.

Reflection Questions

  • What do I notice about my heart when this is removed?

  • Where do I feel discomfort, resistance, or dependence?

  • What might God be teaching me through this practice?
